Southern Oregon Speedway Returns To Racing; Cassell, Tanner, Braaten Earn Victories

White City, Oregon- The last time the clay was shredded at Southern Oregon Speedway was on Saturday, September 7th, 2019. Since then, the facility had laid dormant and quiet as a tomb. But, that all changed as a new era of racing began on Saturday, May 29th, as the White City clay oval roared back to life. Three divisions were in action, two of which were a part of the Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing program, including Sweet Tea IMCA Modifieds, CDA Late Models, and Dusty’s Transmissions IMCA Northern Sport Mods. Opening Night 2021 was presented by Precision Electric.
Craig Cassell made the tow all the way from Albany well worth it as he mastered the Sweet Tea IMCA Modified field for his first win at SOS. Cassell is the newest winner in KMJ Performance Oregon State and Shaw Race Cars Western Region action.
Klamath Falls' Nick Trenchard, in the Rich and Nicky Biehn, owned entry, was second followed by Albert Gill, from Central Point, in third. The rest of the top five was made up of Zach Fettinger, also of Klamath Falls, and fellow Central Point chauffeur Jesse Bailey, in fourth and fifth.
For the CDA Late Models, Joey Tanner conquered the class. Tanner, who hails from Portland and races for the Ray Mitchell and Family team achieved his second win of the season and first at Southern Oregon Speedway.
In second, La Pine's Trent Elliott was behind Tanner, while third at the line would be Dave Foote, from Coos Bay. Medford native Brian Bowman ended his night fourth while behind him, in fifth, was Eric Massey, also of Medford.
The Dusty’s Transmissions IMCA Northern Sport Mods witnessed a familiar face graced victory lane. Central Point driver Jorddon Braaten got the job done in the main event. He now has four wins on the current campaign and two in the KMJ Performance Oregon State competition. Gordon's most recent triumph was at Siskiyou Golden Speedway, in Yreka, California, on May 15th.
Matt Sanders, making the journey from the coastal city of Brookings, was the runner-up, with Medford veteran Rich McCoy scored third. Alliterative Medford racers Wyatt Westfall and Mike Medel balanced the top five in the fourth and fifth spots.
Southern Oregon Speedway returns to racing on Saturday, June 5th, for C&C Contractors Night. Classes on the card will include the World Famous Autos Limited Sprints, Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association, Outlaw Pro Stocks, and Dusty’s Transmissions IMCA Northern Sport Mods.
